Hi, I just read Mato-chan and quite liked it. It has a lot of stuff about insects, but at least its cute.
I translated the four first pages. First time I translated manga, so I'm not sure how well I could do it. :P
Guess who's back, back again? Bug Pope's back, tell a friend.
Ah, this page brings back so many terrible memories of PE class and gym teachers with high ambitions but poor grasps on reality. I think delusion is actually required if you want to get a job as PE teacher.
Anybody else who gets flashbacks to Azumanga Daioh's shoe-kicking scene?

Loggerhead shrikes are awesome. I remember seeing photos of their prey in my college ornithology class.
>>88 Somehow, it's very fitting that Mato-chan would be a bird also known as "butcher bird."
End of the omake chapter. I don't know about you, but Mecha-Mato is going to haunt my nightmares together with Horse Head forever.
Bonus title page, 'cause I felt like it.
Has anybody ever addressed the issue that some of the dudes aren't wearing the same shirt in the second panel, and that, more disturbingly, the faces of the middle two dudes, while still similar to those of the two middle dudes in the first panel, look suspiciously different in the second panel?
That's because there is a whole year in between the photos:

I would also like that. Someone on danbooru said it was Yakumo Tsukamoto from School Rumble. I suppose it kind of looks like her.. not sure though.
>>120I know it's not that good, but.
Oh, I remember one with haruhi and the gang doing the reactions.
Oh, I don't even remember what it was, but If you know what I'm talking about, please post it.
It's called Gaijin 4koma, and there's already a huge thread of it here. http://secchan.net/4koma/kareha.pl/1151430735/l50 If you had spend a few second searching, you'd find it.
Actually, there is a much debate over it's name.
Back when /b/ was not-as-shitty-as-it-is-now flame wars would start about it's name.
Let's have some Touhou 4 Koma.

Something like "Another peaceful day." might be a little more natural than "Today's been a peaceful day again...", and I personally would have gone with "Every Day is Peaceful" for the title (I don't think that が is fulfilling the same function here as the が in, say, 我が家, but I suppose it isn't impossible). The other line looks good. I see you've left the onomatopoeia untranslated -- but nobody can really hold that against you, since English doesn't have a good onomatopoeia for "spacing out".
I agree that the font fits nicely. Do you mind sharing with us what font it is?

The font is Augie (took it from http://www.unblessed.net/guide/type/fonts.html).
Thanks for the tips about the translation... I never seriously learned japanese and my english is still not as good as it could be...
I had really a hard time figuring out those kanjis... What's the better way to find a kanji, without furigana and all, in a dictionary (I only have jwpce)?
I tried doing this one too, but I did a lot of guessing, this time...

The easiest way, in my opinion, is to get an electronic dictionary (or computer program) that supports look-up via handwritten input. No radicals, no stroke counts, no readings. All you have to be able to do is draw the damn thing, and it'll usually find the right kanji on the first attempt. It's incredibly useful. I hear there's software for the Nintendo DS that does stuff like this, too, if you have a DS and don't feel like buying a new device. I personally use a Canon v300, and I've found it to be worth the money...that said, it certainly isn't cheap: the v300 costs over $300.
Learning kanji is a huge bitch. Believe me when I say that I feel your pain. I seriously recommend going electronic, though. I cringe at the thought of using a book to look up kanji by radical or stroke order.
Hey how about some Death Note 4koma
lol...the English has a couple of flaws, but the idea is perfectly fine. I've always thought that the settings for Death Note and Code Geass were terribly similar.
Desu Noto!!!!
Has anyone got the official Death Note 4koma?
Sad that that amusing 4-Koma you found doesn't belong to a long enough series to deserve a whole thread? Well this whole thread is for just that kind of 4-Koma!

In Japanese, onomatopoeias are divided into two categories: those that are meant to mimic actual sounds, and those that are meant to express meaning without regard for whether or not there actually is a sound to be mimicked (there often isn't). In English, the overwhelming majority of our onomatopoeia falls into the first category. In fact, I can't even think of any from the second.
In Japanese, わんわん (wan wan) corresponds to the English "arf arf" or "woof woof," etc. にゃん (nyan) means "meow." Those are pretty straightforward. But then you have words like どんどん (don don), which expresses the idea of something happening quickly, さっさと (sassa to), which expresses the idea of doing something quickly and cleanly (as in not getting distracted), and the infamous しーん (shiin), which expresses silence. The closest thing to that in English would be the sound of a cricket chirping after a joke that fell flat, or a tumbleweed blowing across the stage. There are tons of other words, too, such as でれでれ (dere dere), which can express the state of being hopelessly infatuated with someone; in general, Japanese has many, many more onomatopoeia than English.
As a final note, although it's not really pertinent, many Japanese onomatopoeia play on repetition. Wan wan, don don, dere dere -- repetition like that occurs very often, whereas onomatopoeia such as nyan (which can also show up as nyan nyan) or shiin are perhaps less common. Also, unlike in English, heavy use of onomatopoeia is completely normal. Instead of saying "the dog barked," the Japanese would say something more like "the dog cried 'woof.'"

W...wow. Thanks for the extremely informative post.
Watch as I tantalizingly post an absurd image without any source information.

Post 'em if you've got 'em!
