Oh, Yuhki. I love your sense of humor, but you're killing me with these puns.

The "May Blues" (sometimes called the "May Sickness") is a period of lacking motivation associated with the month of May, shortly after the school year begins.

Chiro says her spirits are meiru (depressed), and Murano wonders if there's some connection between meiru and "May".

But then she says since it's June, Chiro's spirits would have to be June-ru, not May-ru. Then she has the epiphany that since it's so rainy in June, it must be junru (a made up word, but using the pronunciation and kanji for "damp"). So she tells Chiro that from now on, whenever it's June, you have to say your spirits are junru (wet) instead of meiru (depressed).

Here's a call back to the first strip from volume 1.

I really regret not being able to come up with anything that more closely matches the original play on words (nameru = walk over, namekuji = slug).

Chiro's shouted her trademark Name~ (namekuji + dame) a few times since then as well, but I've just been translating it as "Slug".

The song Murano's singing is an old children's song about the rain. It seems to have made an appearance in K-On! as well.

Here's an alternate version I came up with.
I like this one better.
The play on words isn't the same as in the original, but incorporating some kind of pun preserves the feeling better than none at all, right?

More terrible word play.

In the first strip, remembering that namekuji (slug) + dame (no) = name the punchline of this strip is that Chiro screams "Baname!" and the author's note at the bottom says "Short for Banana namekuji dame!"

Also, in case it didn't come across, the "Dum-dum-dum-dum" is supposed to be heavy drums (think like the theme to 2001) followed by trumpet fanfare as the slug appears.

In the second strip, Murano says Banananbo which may be an obscure reference to a song from the 80s, but is more likely just a cutesy way of saying "Banana".

Another thing I haven't been able to preserve for all of these strips is the theme with the titles. Each title has been something + ru. "May-ru", "June-ru", "Bo-ru" (the Balls one), "Banameru", "Bananaru". I kind of tried to preserve that by adding an 'd to the end of the titles, but I haven't been very consistent...
May'd, June'd, Ball'd, Banana'd...

Apologies for the delay.
I didn't have any free time to work on this during the last several days.
There actually is a pun on this page, but it wasn't too bad. The hardest part was the sound effect.

I'm assuming most of you are familiar with the significance of July 7th being Tanabata, the one day of the year when Orihime and Hikoboshi are said to be able to meet, but just in case:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanabata

Also, thank you insect Judas for your post in http://secchan.net/4koma/kareha.pl/1282188525/561.
The term リア充 appeared on this page, and your comments helped.

As for the pun, remembering from the previous page that Cero is saying Gi! when Kushina pulls the reins, the title of the strip on the left was originally "Initial Gi" (as in Initial D).
I changed it to Initial C (C for Cero).

There are a couple of puns in the titles of these two.

The one on the right was originally Gi-shikaisei a pun on kishikaisei which means to turn around a hopeless situation.
I figured 'Upset' had a nice dual meaning of upsetting the cart literally by flipping it, and upsetting the situation (like an upset victory in sports).

The one on the left was originally Gi-spect obviously a pun on "Respect."

I'm not sure I understand the significance of the title on the right. Is kissing Yaeko supposed to be Utopia?

Miss Yachiho actually says "This isn't the Pocky Game!" but I thought that reference might be too obscure, and I couldn't resist mentioning Lady and the Tramp since that's the first thing I thought of when I saw this page.
The Pocky Game is the same thing in principle. Two people eat a piece of pocky from either end and meet in the middle.
In fact, there was a reference to it once before in http://secchan.net/4koma/kareha.pl/1282188525/558

Oh man, Pop-up Pirate. Anyone else remember that game? I didn't realize it originated in Japan.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop-up_Pirate

Murano makes a little bit of a joke by saying she's Mura-Hige Kiki Ippatsu instead of Kuro-Hige Kiki Ippatsu, but it didn't seem significant enough to translate. Especially when the title is already "Pop-up Murano".

A little more research explains the "Utopia" title.
Utopia is the name of a Japanese comedy duo that was popular in the 80s. One of their most famous acts was a skit where two people stretch a rubber band using their mouths, until one of them lets it go.

I had thought of maybe doing a weblog or something at some point, but I really don't translate that many titles for it to be worthwhile.

Didn't a lot of those manga reader sites get shut down for "piracy" of unlicensed titles anyway?

It's kind of nice to see Yachiho steering the club back towards its original purpose after Chiro hijacked it last year.

In the original punchline of the strip on the left, Chiro says they'll get reported to JARO, the Japan Advertising Review Organization, a consumer protection group dedicated to truth in advertising. I figured that was probably too obscure for most readers though.

A few random notes.
I think "Itokawa" might be a reference to this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hideo_Itokawa

"Neander-tar-man" is a portmanteau of "Neanderthal Man" and "Tar Man". It flows a little better in Japanese with the pronunciation of L/R being the same. Possibly a reference to "Tarman" from Return of the Living Dead (the only Tarman I'm aware of), but maybe there's no connection.
The "You'll Laugh! You'll Cry!" is my attempt at stereotypical old-school movie hype. The original text says "All of America Wept," a phrase used in Japan in the past to promote big Hollywood movies, which has since become cliched and meaningless.

Revised.
I kind of plowed through this page last night just trying to get it done, but I didn't have a very good feeling about it. I revisited it tonight and made some adjustments and hopefully corrected some things.

One issue was my misunderstanding of the word 'Sabbat' to mean the Hebrew Sabbath, but actually the connotations are of the Witches' Sabbath. In other words, some kind of dark, clandestine meeting with rituals involving headless chickens...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witches%27_Sabbath
I keep thinking there's a more common word for that than "Sabbat" but it's not coming to me.

Also, another note on Itokawa:

Yes, Lady Gaga and Eraserhead are both mentioned by name by Uzu and Hisa.
I was more surprised by the Lady Gaga reference than the Eraserhead reference. That's well known film after all, but I was surprised that an American pop star would be known in Japan.

There's one part I'm not sure about on this page.
After Mr. Fukuhari seemingly reads Miss Yachiho's mind, she says コピ… (Kopi or "Copy" I guess) which I can only presume is being used to indicate that his words directly reflected her thoughts.
If it was supposed to mean something else, I didn't get it.

Look who's back.

I'm not 100% sure of the meaning of "Emmanuelle-esque Days", but the closest thing I can find is a relatively famous softcore pornographic French film from the 70s titled Emmanuelle. Also, a Google search for that phrase (in Japanese) turns up websites mostly dealing with sex, so I think I get the basic idea.

The original joke that gets Chiro so mad is that in Japanese, "Hula" sounds like "Fura-Fura" (in Japanese phonetics there's no distinction between "R" and "L", and there's also no distinction between "H" and "F", so they're both written フラ).
Fura-Fura means wobbly or dizzy.

So Yaeko says she got Fura-Fura from the Hula.

The title "Fool-ano" was using the "Fura-Fura" pun again. The original was "Fura-Fura-ano" (a portmanteau of "wobbly" and "Murano").
Since almost all of the titles have had the word "Hula" in them, this one was similar, but in this instance it had nothing to do with the Hula.

Based on what Mato says in http://secchan.net/4koma/kareha.pl/1229725342/204
I'm guessing tapeworm eggs.

Just in case anyone hasn't realized, each of these chapters takes place a month apart, presumably during the month it was published. The one with the summer camp was August. The one with the end of the world was September. The one with the cultural festival was October (school cultural festivals are typically in October for some reason). The last one where Murano wanted to warm things up by turning the club into a tropical island was November.

This begins the December chapter.

If I slowed down a little I could actually post these in the appropriate months. I would have to limit myself to 8 pages per month though, or something like 2 per week.

This one required quite a bit of research, and as such, requires quite a bit of explanation.

That thing Chiro is using is based on something that actually used to be sold out of the back of magazines (think along the lines of X-ray specs).
Here are a few pages I found researching it:
The mail order ads
http://www.runaway-fellows.com/oldies/tsure/fobs.html
http://1st.geocities.jp/yuinott001/secretservice/mission05.html

More pictures of the object itself
http://kiyuu.dtiblog.com/blog-entry-163.html

Most of these pages are making fun of how ludicrous this thing is. According to the ad, it's a super-powerful, super-intelligent man-made spirit trapped in a jar (along with a post-it note and some flour apparently) that will grant the user's wish(es) by either affecting the targeted individuals or delivering whatever it is you desire.

The "FOBS" stands for Fractional Orbital Bombardment System.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractional_Orbital_Bombardment_System

Apparently it's a kind of supernatural "missle" (that's how the ads describe it) that can target anyone, anywhere in the world, similar to how a FOBS missle can target any place on the planet.

The ad pictured in http://1st.geocities.jp/yuinott001/secretservice/mission05.html has even more levels available.

Chicken Self-Introduction 1 was in http://secchan.net/4koma/kareha.pl/1282188525/551

I believe Chicken George is a reference to the main character from the manga Fourteen.
http://theeasternstandard.blogspot.com/2009/07/kazuo-umezu-introduces-chicken-george.html

For the "Chicken Diet" part, the word she uses, pronounced Chikin, is written 遅筋 and means "slow twitch muscle fiber".
From what I gather, the chikin diet has something to do with exercising your muscles as part of the diet in order to more efficiently utilize the calories you consume, since muscle requires more calories to maintain.

Of course that's impossible to translate and still retain the joke, so you can just think of it as an all-chicken diet instead.

I believe Momo refers to the series Magical Princess Minky Momo, and Sasami refers to the series Sasami: Magical Girls Club.

All three names are also references to cuts of chicken (as you may be able to tell by their shapes).
Momo is thigh, Mune is breast, and Sasami is chicken tenderloin.

Probably using it as a topic in conversation or something.

Like watching anime and ask people if they've seen the latest episode of certain anime to start a conversation.

Then about 2-3 minutes later you'll end up talking about other topics completely.

So the Murano Ranger is Murano wearing a Murano costume?

In the second strip, Chiro actually says it isn't the "8th grade sickness" mentioned in the last volume, but I assume she's specifically referring to how worked up Miss Yachiho got when she found out they were roleplaying.

Just an FYI to everyone, progress on Chiro-chan is being temporarily delayed.
I've recently been hired as the official translator for a handful of series from a new monthly doujin anthology (the title is Xenocross if you want to look it up, it's adults only though), so work on those will be taking precedence.
Each chapter only takes me a few days though, so as long as they don't give them to me all at once each month, the delays shouldn't be significant.

This month they did give them to me all at once though, and that combined with the fact that I'll be out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday in two weeks, means it may be December before I get back to Chiro-chan...
I'll try to do a page or two next week though if I can.

"Plastic Model Spirit" (also Plamo Spirit or Puramo Spirit) was a term first coined in the manga Plamo Kyoshiro (or Puramo Kyoshiro or Puramo Kyoushirou depending on how you romanize it). It was an 80s series about model enthusiasts who built Gundam models and then fought them against each other in virtual reality. Plastic Model Spirit is the term used to describe the driving force behind a plastic model enthusiast.

I'm not entirely sure I get Chiro's last line. Literally it's just "Plastic, isn't it?" But I'm not sure if she's saying the gloves are already plastic, or if it she's saying it would make more sense for them to be plastic, rather than wood or metal considering it's the Plastic model spirit...

Today's page is educational, because I left a Japanese idiom untranslated.

I'm sure the concept is familiar to everyone, but I couldn't think of an English expression that represented the same thing.

"Match Pump" means someone getting credit for solving a situation they started in the first place. Starting a fire with a match, then putting it out with a water pump.

Anyone who saw Azumanga should remember the "Go Home Club". A name for students who aren't in any after school activities.

It makes more sense for Murano to be the club president anyway. The rest of them are all seniors, so they'll be gone after this year anyway.

Although who knows how many ghost members there are... maybe one of them might win?

Since I suck at NOT spoiling, this post is gonna contains spoiler.
The actual supernatural creature is just the arm, it's the "Monkey Paw" so to say, but in the anime it's explained that it's actually Rainy Devil, a type of devil and thus its wish granting power.

The person is Suruga Kanbaru, she claims to be in love with the main guy's girlfriend and thus why she wish he'd disappear, although after he saved her (well, more like contract was canceled, but not by the guy's action, he just got wtfpwned) She (most likely half-jokingly) claims to be his sex-slave of sort instead.

Well, simply put, she's a pervert, her room is also filled with BL/Yaoi books/novels.

The particular fight scene is...rather gruesome...thankfully it was all in monochrome so it was less traumatizing.

Sorry I missed this week. I'm building a new PC so that took up most of my time today. I may get a chance to post a page or two before next Saturday to make up for this weekend, but I can't say for sure.

Sorry for the long delay. I hope we haven't lost any readers. I should be able to update more regularly now. At least until I finish volume 4, which is drawing to a close now...

Taking Organics?

I'm kind of guessing here in the last panel.
Chiro says ア○ボ (A-bo), so I'm having to guess at what the missing letter is.

Searching for アンボ (Anbo) turns up photos of face protectors, some of which look a lot like the one built into Cero's rain coat. I don't really know the significance of it though. It seems to be a particular model produced by the company Toyo.
http://d-kougu.com/?mode=cate&cbid=177982&csid=13&sort=n

I'm not really sure what Chiro's comment after that means either. If she's talking about the face shield, or something else.

Okay, slight change of pronouns on the last two.
I kept having Murano say "we" since I thought she and Mato came over together, but apparently they came independently.

I think Mato is squirming while making a "No-No" gesture with her hand.

She looks like the Dancing Baby though.

You know, Cero looks quite a bit like a slug himself in the first panel there.

If you'll recall from http://secchan.net/4koma/kareha.pl/1282188525/139 Cero spins when he gets excited.

Or maybe this? アソボ (Asobo)?

http://www.garitto.com/product/10854223

This looks like it's just meant to mimic the robot Asimo though, and not like it's something that would be well enough known to parody.

Oh wait, I'm an idiot.
It's アイボ (Aibo), the little robot dog that was popular several years ago. That would explain Chiro's second comment as well.

I'll fix the page later today.

I'm not sure if there's a better term for "Pressure Play".
It's a fetish involving being constricted, usually by having fat women sit on you.

I think this is the first time we've seen anyone other than Bunny within a Bunny strip.

I don't know why, but that last panel with the army of roaches somehow make me think of Space Marine's "FOR THE EMPEROR!" battle cry .- . (in this case, 'empress', not that Mato is one)

And not the usual Tyranid's entrance of ZERGRUSHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Here's Volume 4. There were a few minor tweaks and corrections made, so it's not 100% identical to the pages posted here. Mostly just correcting typos or something though.

http://www.(media)(fire).com/file/geyc9m0jx4x05di/Chiro-chan_Volume_04_English.rar

I tried to change the translation notes from the usual .txt file to actual image files, but there wasn't an easy way to copy them with formatting intact, and I was too lazy to retype the whole thing.

Also, it's not included in the archive, but I have absurd-res versions of the covers from both >>1 and >>229 I can upload separately if anyone's interested (we're talking like 7MB per file).

>>229
I would guess volume 5 will be out in late summer to early fall. Of course I'll post updates as I get them.

As usuall, you'll need to remove the parentheses in the website's name in the link above.

Unless the spam filter has been changed...
Let's see...
Nope, still blocks the word "media" "fire".

Is one really any better than the other?

Besides, new Bunny is just old Bunny's brain in a new body.
And old Bunny is a haggard shell of (her?) former self.
