Actually, there are two types of tengu. The goblin-like one, which is the one you described, and a crow-like one, which Aya is based on. It looks like ZUN did a good job on adaptating. Also, the crow-tengu don't have long noses.

After skimming the article with particular attention for mention of crow-related Tengu, I was unable to find information to support your claim. This leads me to suspect that ZUN really just didn't think a long nose would be becoming of a pretty girl, so he chose to leave it out. If I'm wrong, please feel free to point me in the direction of documents that say otherwise.
